How do I set up electricity, water and gas for a new home in the Phoenix area?

Short answer

You do not choose your electricity company; the address decides whether it is SRP or APS (parts of Mesa have a city utility). Gas, where a home has it, is Southwest Gas, and water, sewer and trash come from the city. Start all of them online a few days before move-in; a deposit may apply if you have no US credit history.

The Phoenix area is split between two electricity providers with fixed territories: Salt River Project serves much of Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert, and Arizona Public Service serves northern Phoenix, Scottsdale, the West Valley and most of the rest of the state. Enter the address on either site to see who serves it, start service and compare rate plans, because time-of-use plans reward running appliances outside summer peak hours [1] [2]. Mesa runs its own electric and gas utility in parts of the city [3].

Many Arizona homes are all-electric; where there is natural gas it is almost always Southwest Gas, which has its own start-service process [4]. Water, sewer and rubbish collection are municipal: Phoenix Water Services for Phoenix addresses, and the city utility departments for Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler and Gilbert [5] [6] [7] [8] [9].

Newcomers without a US credit file are often asked for a security deposit or a letter of good standing from a previous utility; deposits are typically refunded after a year of on-time payments. Ask for the budget-billing option if you want the summer electricity peak spread over twelve months.

Checklist

  1. Look up the address: SRP or APS, and pick a rate plan [1] [2].

  2. Gas, if the home has it: Southwest Gas [4].

  3. Water, sewer and trash: the city of the address [5].

  4. Keep the account numbers; they double as proof of residency for the MVD and schools.
