I am an engineer relocating for a semiconductor job in Chandler — where should I live and what will it cost?
Short answer
For the Chandler fabs, most engineers live in Chandler itself, Gilbert, Ahwatukee or Tempe, all within about 15 to 25 minutes. If your plant is the TSMC campus in north Phoenix instead, look at Deer Valley, Norterra, Anthem, Peoria and Glendale’s Arrowhead area. Housing will dominate your budget; semiconductor salaries in the Valley are above the local median, so compare neighbourhoods on commute and schools first.
Chandler’s Price Road corridor hosts Intel’s Ocotillo campus and a cluster of suppliers, and the city’s economic development pages describe the employer base [1]. South Chandler and Ocotillo put you minutes away in newer master-planned communities under Chandler Unified; Gilbert offers similar homes and Gilbert Public Schools a few minutes further east; Ahwatukee and Tempe suit people who prefer established areas or an urban feel, with Tempe adding the light rail [2] [3] [4].
TSMC’s fabs sit in north Phoenix near the I-17 and Loop 303, forty minutes from Chandler, so the two clusters have different housing maps: for north Phoenix the practical choices are the Deer Valley and Norterra areas of Phoenix, Anthem to the north, and Peoria and Glendale (the Arrowhead area) to the west, served by the Deer Valley and Peoria districts. Our Glendale/Arrowhead guide covers the West Valley option [5] [6].
On cost, housing is the variable: engineer salaries here sit well above the metro median wage published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and GPEC’s regional data compares living costs with other tech hubs [7] [8]. Beyond rent or mortgage, budget for two cars, summer electricity and, if you arrive without US credit, higher deposits in the first year.
