What is Arizona TPT and which business taxes and licenses do I need?

Short answer

TPT, the transaction privilege tax, is Arizona’s version of sales tax: it is levied on the business for the privilege of doing taxable business here, at rates that depend on the activity and the city, and you license for it, collect it and remit it through the Department of Revenue. Employers also register for state withholding and unemployment insurance, corporations pay a flat state income tax, and some cities and professions require their own licences.

Unlike a conventional sales tax, TPT is technically owed by the seller, who normally passes it to the customer. Which activities are taxable (retail, restaurants, contracting, commercial leasing, short-term lodging and more) and at what combined state, county and city rate is set out by business class on the Department of Revenue’s business pages, together with the single state licence that now covers all cities, filed and paid online at AZTaxes [1]. Filing frequency depends on your volume [2].

If you hire, you register for state income tax withholding with the Department of Revenue and for unemployment insurance with the Department of Economic Security; Arizona also requires every employer to verify new hires’ work authorisation through the federal E-Verify system [1] [3]. Corporations pay Arizona corporate income tax at a flat rate; LLCs are usually taxed through their owners.

Licences sit at several levels: the state TPT licence, a city business licence in some cities, professional licences from state boards for regulated trades, and the entity filing itself with the Corporation Commission [4]. Trade names are registered with the Secretary of State [5].
